The word apologetics comes from a Greek word that means “to give a defense” and involves reasoned arguments to demonstrate and defend the truth claims of Christianity. The goal is not to covert people through argumentation but to avail people from certain hangups that hinder them from opening themselves up to the presence of Jesus Christ. Today there is a cacophony of ideas and beliefs vying for people’s allegiance that are false and sinful. Further, most people know what they believe, but they do not know why they believe what they believe because they have not thought through their assumptions. This has cased misguided notions and visceral rebukes leveled at religion, and particular Christianity. Apologetics steps in to correct erroneous thinking by employing Scripture, philosophy, logic, history, science, and evidence.
