Theology is simply the study of God. People engage in theology anytime they strive to understanding God either through Scripture, philosophy, revelation, or reason. God wants to be known by people and provides ample opportunities to that end. Whenever people take advantage of the multiplicity of ways to understand God they are engaging in theology.

Sometimes theology requires debate when two or more interpretations conflict. When debate happens, it is imperative to ground discussion in Scripture along with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. To do otherwise risks devolving into highly subjective opinions that are often grounded in wishful thinking instead of reason. There is nothing wrong with healthy debate about God since people are striving to understand an infinite being with finite and sinful minds. Thus, people are bound hold some erroneous beliefs that need to be tested and refined. Often pursuing the truth with others who are likewise passionate about God is helpful. What is important is to engage in conversation with mutual respect in the pursuit of the truth of God.
